The Loser hut
Ansichtskarte der Loserhütte nach deren Errichtung im Jahr 1882After the founding of the Ausseerland Alpine Club in 1874, the first thoughts were given to building a refuge hut. Funds were collected to build a hut and in 1881 the section decided to find a suitable site. At first, the Sarstein was considered for a hut, but no suitable site was found on the Aussee side. In the area of the Lahngang lakes in Grundlsee, hunting reasons spoke against building a hut.
Forester Josef Gasperl joined the ascent of the Loser and led the searchers to a place where everything fitted together. A flat, almost avalanche-proof area, plenty of spring water and a magnificent view.
In the fall of 1881, wood was felled and cut below the Augstalm and delivered by oxen over the "Harscht" (ice and snow) in March 1882. In July 1882, the hut was opened with a simple celebration.
Prominent guests such as Richard Strauss and Empress Elisabeth often stopped off at the Loser hut. The Empress even praised the well-run and clean hut in one of her hut book entries.
